"You may be the most talented person who ever walked the good earth and possess the right and proper technical skills. But you still may not get hired", writes career consultant, speaker, and nationally syndicated columnist Andrea Kay in her results oriented and practical idea filled book This Is How to Get Your Next Job: An Inside Look at What Employers Really Want . The author describes how despite excellent qualifications and the right connections, the real reason that otherwise skilled and talented people fail to get hired is how they seem to the prospective employer.
Andrea Kay understands that employers place great emphasis on on how an employment seeker seems, acts, and talks about during the interview. The author presents very compelling evidence that even if the job seeker was suitable in every way for the position, the interviewee's behavior would keep them from being hired for the role. For many employers, this excluding of he applicant might be the result of readily described actions or words, or something more nebulous like being the wrong fit for the organization.
Andrea Kay points out that in today's economy, employers don't want to make costly mistakes in their hiring of employees. To prevent being one of the overlooked applicants, the author offers advice on what not to say or do; as well as how to behave properly and say the the right things, so as to seem to be the right person for the job.
Andrea Kay (photo left) recognizes that bad behavior on the part of interviews is more the norm than the exception in the world of employment. The author shares the opinion of hiring managers that because of the frequency of bad behavior and inappropriate conversation during interviews, that there is a sever shortage of people who are right for their workplace. To counter this perception the author shows applicants what recruitment offers and hiring managers are seeking from their potential employees.
Andrea Kay presents the real world tested truth about what employers do not want to see or hear from their potential employees. As the author demonstrates, what an applicant wears to the interview, how they act during the interview, and what they say to the hiring manager are of critical importance. With those common mistakes in mind, Andrea Kay offers the following hands on advice to prospective employees:
* You are what you seem
* Tell and show to align your words with your actions
* 15 things you should never do
* 15 things you should never talk about or say
* 10 things you should never wear
* 15 things you should never do once you get a job or in your career - ever
For me,the power of the book is how Andrea Kay combines a comprehensive framework for doing and saying the right things during an interview, with real world based advice of what to do or not do so as to land that job. The author presents the information in a clear and concise format that offers the job seeker information from employers themselves. The author talked to real world employers about what they really looked for in prospective employees. The book contains the often startling results of those open and honest conversations.
Andrea Kay provides actual discussions with employers about what interviewees should and shoudl not do if they really want to get a job. The good news in the book is that the worst behaviors that can derail any job interview, can be avoided with care and practice. The right way to act, the most appropriate topics for discussion, and how to dress for interview success, are spelled out for the job seeker as well. The point form style, and short snappy chapters make the book a delight to read, and the lessons a joy to learn, making the book a must for any jobseeker.
I highly recommend the real world employer advice based book This Is How to Get Your Next Job: An Inside Look at What Employers Really Want by Andrea Kay, to any employment seekers looking for a clear and practical guide for what to do and what to stop doing when on a job interview. If you are what you seem, then this book will transform you into a person who employers can't wait to hire.
