Ctrl Alt Delete by Mitch Joel

In my network, folks know me as the guy obsessed with the future of ‘social business’ – so I should be excited about social media right?

It’s the opposite. My own mentors in the medium remind me, social media is Ctrlover a decade old now. The experts are light years ahead, but I still can’t mention the concept with out the ROI defense and Facebook being mentioned to shut down the conversation. It’s driving me nuts.

Enter Mitch Joel who gave a name to our current digital divide in business… purgatory. I agree 100% – there are two parts to this book that make it a MUST read for anyone who is on board with digital and curious about the future.

In 2014 everyone is going to be asking,what’s our Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn strategy. Sorry, that’s a 2012 question. The real questions is, how do we make the entire experience seamless?

Mitch has been in the digital trenches with his consulting company, he’s been engaging using blogs, podcasts and writing online for the world’s biggest business brands ( Harvard Business, Fast Company to name a couple ) I highly recommend following him. One of the world’s most well known authors in marketing Seth Godin has been walking with him and if you want to watch, this long discussion online is exactly why you should read this book if you work in business and wonder if this is worth your time reading.

Most of all his attitude towards strategy, disconnected devices ( not a 24-7 tweeter, like me he has a family and his phone is always on silent ) the reality of time management really comes through. He’s more business than social.

For me, the power of the book is how Said Dawlabani combines a comprehensive examination and framework for his cultural values systems economics, with the prescriptive approach necessary for leaders to make the transition to the new economic paradigm. The author considers the societal culture and human values to form integral parts of the economic system. This inclusive approach to economic theory is lacking in the mainstream economic thought that has become conventional wisdom. The author demonstrates the historic and current failure of those isolated theories.

Said Dawlabani shows clearly how a cultural values systems theory is essential for navigating the current economic crisis, and to break the deadlock that has stifled the capitalist system. The author understands that economists must remove the rigidity of their theories, and consider societal and cultural evolution as an integral part to a holistic understanding of the economic system. With the road map offered by Said Dawlabani, the opportunity arises to establish a new form of leadership in both government and the private sector. The author also provides examples of where that transition is already taking place, and that existing economic theory is unable to cope with or describe the transformation.

For me, the power of the book is how David Goldstein and Otto Kroeger combine a comprehensive personality based framework for establishing creativity, and provide the practical tools and techniques appropriate for each of the personality types. The authors provide an empowering alternative, not only to the misconceptions about creativity as being confined to a select few, but to the idea that one method of creative thinking will work for everyone. The authors offer a fascinating and well considered use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) for facilitating different creative styles and techniques for different people.

The authors identify, through application of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), of how individuals prefer to think and act creatively. Through recognition of the different personality styles, strengths and weaknesses in team members can be identified to maximize the team skills. The entire book is written in a hands on and usability format to provide the skills needed to discover and deal with those often challenging workplace liars.

Carol Kinsey Goman also presents the provocative concept that all of us are guilty of lying, and that the work environment may contribute to the phenomenon of lying. While liars may abound in any workplace, the author offers concrete and actionable strategies for reducing the level of lies encountered at work. With its foundations of self serve information, radical transparency, and real time relevance, Youtility moves marketing far beyond the intrusive top of mind awareness approach. What are some of the major changes underway in education?

Rob Sparks: With the current economic climate and a backdrop of cost cutting, education institutions across the world are under more pressure to ensure high levels of student satisfaction, successful outcomes and competitiveness on a global scale. The higher education market has always been one of change, but these pressures plus rapid growth in student populations are driving intense re-evaluation of people, programs, partners and services that will transform the market unlike anything before.

With global student enrollment anticipated to rise from 99M to 414M by 2030, students clearly will realize the benefit of this re-examination and revitalization of high quality, effective education models and systems.

From a technology standpoint, what is needed to help higher education institutions manage this change effectively?

Rob Sparks: Given that a great educational experience is a requirement for all students to succeed, it is equally important that higher education institutions are efficient in their day-to-day operations. An integrated business solution operating across campuses is perhaps the greatest single advantage an institution can have over its competitors.

Whether it is on-premise, in the cloud, or a hybrid mix of the two, the right solution can keep business processes up to date throughout all changes, internally or externally driven. In that way, an institution can ensure it is directing its people and other resources to directly affect the student educational experience, and not be diverted into transactional, manual tasks that detract from the educational mission.

Are you talking just about the business office end of operations?

Rob Sparks: Our vision goes beyond the business office and includes the transformation of IT to be more essential, more innovative and more useful throughout an institution. For example, a system that allows admissions representatives, registrars, financial aid officers, student life staffers and career counselors to share data about matriculated students based on a single version of the truth can make counseling students more consistent and direct.

Extend that vision into strategic business partnerships with potential employers and the like, and you can see the powerful potential technology can have to help students of all abilities reach their full academic and future employment potential. This will be especially important as students become increasingly mobile, and employers want to ensure a level set of academic proficiencies for all new hires no matter where they were educated.

It sounds like technology can help higher education institutions manage increasingly complex worlds. Is that correct?

Rob Sparks: Yes, the only constant is change here in higher education and the world is getting more complex, not less. Technology can not only manage the increasing complexities of running an institution, it can also minimize threats and address language/culture/currency nuances that exist across and within borders and regions. It moves from just a great equalizer to a competitive edge that in the end will make students more successful and in turn, help the institution meet its operational and revenue goals.

You mentioned a backdrop of cost-cutting. How does UNIT4 Business Software work with institutions to help bring technology costs down?
