Maverick the Mustang (photo left) is an American Mustang who was captured by the BLM. He was abused, beaten and branded with a big U as a 3 Striker - Unadoptable, Untouchable and Unlovable. Maverick was an outcast - and he almost starved to death at the hands of humans.

But then Maverick found courage, faith and trust, thanks to the love of gentle humans - two-leggeds who are so very different from those who hurt him.

When he stepped into his courage and faced his fear, Maverick found his Unstoppable self.

So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport - Book review

So Good They Can't Ignore You

Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love

By: Cal Newport

Published: September 18, 2012
Format: Hardcover, 304 pages
ISBN-10: 1455509124
ISBN-13: 978-1455509126
Publisher Business Plus/Hachette

"My question was clear: How do people end up loving what they do? And I needed an answer", writes assistant professor of computer science at Georgetown University, Cal Newport, in his insight filled and thought provoking book So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love. The author describes his quest to discover why so many people end up loving what they do; why so many other people fail in that regard; and offers some deeply personal thoughts based on his journey.

Cal Newport recognizes that something crucial has long been missing from the standard advice of following your passion toward career satisfaction. The author presents a compelling case that this usually presented axiom is not only incorrect, but also dangerous. Instead of leading to the sought after love of the job, the constant follower of passion may suffer from anxiety, and change jobsso many times that no career is ever established. Cal Newport turns the old adage upside down and suggests that perhaps instead of following the passion, that the passion should instead follow the person. The author considers the alternative path of gaining skills and abilities that make the individual good at the job, and that the passion will emerge from that sense of achieving great things on the job.

Cal Newport (photo left) understands that clear empirical evidence and scientific studies contradicts the cliche of following your passion. Indeed, the author points out that simply trying to figure out where tat elusive passion lies can result in complete career derailment. Instead of creating job engagement and satisfaction, the misguided search for passion can result in complete job dissatisfaction. Cal Newport presents the contrarian position of developing skills, and becoming very effective at the job, and that the passion will flow naturally from that skill level.

Cal Newport presents four guiding principles as rules to achieving real and lasting job and career satisfaction. Those four rules are as follows:

* Don't follow your passion
* Be so good they can't ignore you: Importance of skill
* Turn down a promotion: Importance of control
* Think Small, act big: Importance of mission

For me, the power of the book is how Cal Newport combines his personal quest to answer the question of following one's passion, with scientific studies and case studies of how following passion is st best an incomplete thesis. The author presents a compelling case for establishing skill as the forerunner to passion. Cal Newport points out that passion follows skill and achievement, and not the other way around. This critical insight transforms the understanding of how the dynamics of career satisfaction really work.

The author provides his four rules based on research and observation that provide an alternative approach to finding an appropriate career. A combination of autonomy, skills, experience and a mission are more essential elements in job satisfaction. With these principles in place, Cal Newport describes how they lead to achievement, which in turn creates and establishes the personal passion.

I highly recommend the paradigm transformational and successful career building book So Good They Can't Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love by Cal Newport, to anyone beginning or at any stage of their career path who is seeking an alternative and research based case for competence over passion. Instead of spending time figuring out your passion, this book makes a strong case for using that time to develop your skills, as they will lead to the passion being sought.

"This book shares details of the unprecedented opportunity you have to (re)design your career and life to achieve financial independence and success on your own terms", writes entrepreneur, coach, radio host, and author of the comprehensive and very practical book Click Millionaires: Work Less, Live More with an Internet Business You Love. The Zen Leader by Ginny Whitelaw - Book review

The Zen Leader

10 Ways to Go From Barely Managing to Leading Fearlessly

By: Ginny Whitelaw, Ph.D.

Published: April 22, 2012
Format: Paperback, 256 pages
ISBN-10: 1601632118
ISBN-13: 978-1601632111
Publisher: Career Press

"The pressure will not go away. But here is a way beyond giving up or giving in. Rather, give way and reveal the Zen leader in you", writes leadership coach and co-founder of Focus Leadership, Ginny WHitelaw, Ph.D., in her transformational and leadership strengthening book The Zen Leader: 10 Ways to Go From Barely Managing to Leading Fearlessly. The author describes how stress and pressures have increased dramatically, and leaders are challenged to cope with ever more and rapid change. Ginny Whitelaw offers an alternative approach to simply working harder and longer through the principles of Zen leadership.

Ginny Whitelaw understands that talented and dedicated leaders are facing difficulty keeping up with change. That ever increasing speed of change arrives in the form of new technology, globalization, industry transformation, and societal evolution. At the same time, speed causes even greater speed as a response. Ginny Whitelaw proposes moving beyond the usual attempts to cope with stress and the pressures of the modern world. In place of simply bearing down and working harder, or perusing the latest stress reduction techniques, the author provides another path. In place of fighting the pressure, and being used by it, Ginny Whitelaw suggests using the pressure itself to propel forward with fresh breakthroughs.

Ginny Whitelaw, Ph.D. (photo left) recognizes that developmental breakthroughs are necessary to achieve a fresh balance in work and in life. If the current state of thinking and acting is not up to the challenges faced, then a new higher level of breakthrough is necessary. For Ginny Whitelaw, this fresh alternative is what she calls breaking free and flip to the next stage. A flip, for the author, is a radical reframing of pressure to creating change from the inside out, personal exhaustion that changes to attracting the future, and seeing one's personality and applying the right types of energy.

Ginny Whitelaw proposes ten ways to flip, and how to apply these fresh reframings to any business or personal circumstances. The guiding flips are as follows:

* From Coping to Transforming
* From Tension to Extension
* From Or to And
* From Out There to In Here
* From Playing to Your Strengths to Strengthening Your Play
* From Controlling to Connecting
* From Driving Results to Attracting the Future
* From It's All About Me to I'm All About It
* From Local self to Whole Self
* From Delusion to Awakening

For me, the power of the book is how Ginny Whitelaw addresses the challenges faced in today's ever faster and pressure driven world, with an alternative approach to meeting those challenges. The author takes a holistic path toward reaching Zen leadership. Ginny Whitelaw presents leadership as a journey, and not a problem that can be solved with stress relief or some best practices. In its place, the author proposes a radical solution to the pressures of the modern world.

Instead of fighting them, or letting them control your emotions and actions, Ginny Whitelaw suggests using that pressure itself as an empowering force to flip and propel the leader to a higher level of understanding. Instead of thinking in terms of the leader doing more, the author guides to the leader to a place of being more. Instead of the pressures claiming the leader's energy and life, the transformational leader reclaims their entire being and themselves, and eventually achieve the status of Zen leadership.

I highly recommend the revolutionary and inspirational book The Zen Leader: 10 Ways to Go From Barely Managing to Leading Fearlessly by Ginny Whitelaw, to any leaders who are facing the stresses and challenges of the modern world and who are seeking a viable and fresh alternative to the usual strategies and best practices on offer. This book will transform your worldview as well as empowering you to take back your authentic self, leading to new and exciting breakthroughs.

The Click Moment by Frans Johannson - Book review

The Click Moment

Seizing Opportunity in an Unpredictable World

By: Frans Johansson

Published: August 30, 2012
Format: Hardcover, 256 pages
ISBN-10: 1591844932
ISBN-13: 978-1591844938
Publisher: Portfolio/Penguin

"The world is an unpredictable place", writes speaker, entrepreneurs, and innovator Frans Johannson, in his fascinating and thought provoking book The Click Moment: Seizing Opportunity in an Unpredictable World. The author describes two simple but very challenging and unexpected ideas. The first idea is that the world is more random than we believe it to be. The second concept is that individuals and organizations can take action to grab hold of that randomness and transform its force to their benefit.

Frans Johansson recognizes that there is a missing element in the standard success narratives of possessing a rare talent, acquiring ten thousand hours of practice, or careful and intense strategy. Foe the author, that missing element is one of the sheer randomness of events, people, and encounters. Instead of the world being predictable, and naturally following the prescribed paths, random and unexpected turns are more likely to achieve a successful outcome. Instead of either dismissing these random moments as unrepeatable luck, or considering them to the be product of some grand design and planning, the author takes a different approach. To achieve a successful result, and achieving what Frans Johansson calls the click moment, he provides insights to steering the odds of random success in your favor.

Frans Johansson (photo left) understands that many people, hailed as unparalleled geniuses, were simply the beneficiaries of a random event. That event may have been a chance meeting, a noticed detail that could have been missed as easily, or something turning out in a completely unexpected or even previously unwanted manner. Strategy, careful planning, and detailed analysis are usually given the credit, but for Frans Johansson, the real driver was some random variable. The world, writes the author, moves in unpredictable and unexpected ways.

The author doesn't let the random nature of events take complete control, however. The second part of the book provides a guide to transforming randomness into an advantage. The author shares the perhaps startling insight that random events can be captured and their focus used to create unexpected innovation. These click moments, where randomness can be brought to bear on the events and ideas, can be cultivated and brought to focus. Some of the tactics for capturing random click moments, as offered by Frans Johansson, are as follows:

* Take your eyes off the ball
* Use intersectional thinking
* Follow your curiosity
* Reject the predictable path
* Make purposeful bets

For me, the power of the book is how Frans Johansson provides alternative insights into innovation and success, and shares the techniques and exercises for stimulating and capturing those serendipitous click moments. The author shares the intriguing stories of people who had that click moment, through taking actions outside of their usual behavior and focus. Instead of writing off events that were random, the author demonstrates who those chance moments were understood and used as a springboard.

Everyone experiences random, potentially transformational events and moments, but they are all too often ignored, overlooked, or dismissed entirely. Frans Johansson guides the random event seeker toward uncovering insights and breakthroughs in unexpected ways, through simple changes of action and of intention. Life may be unpredictable, but it is possible to take advantage of those same unpredictable events and moments, to achieve amazing and unexpected outcomes.

I highly recommend the insightful and transformational book The Click Moment: Seizing Opportunity in an Unpredictable World by Frans Johannson, to anyone in any endeavor, who is seeking an alternative way to look at the world and its unpredictable happenings. This book will create those insights and breakthroughs that will change your business and build your innovation.

Grounders by Tom Slone - Book review

Grounders

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey of Baseball, History, and Mentoring

By: Tom Slone

Published: October 7, 2011
Format: Paperback, 160 pages
ISBN-10: 1466357967
ISBN-13: 978-1466357969
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform

"In every city, our travels provided the boys with opportunities to learn important lessons about life, baseball, and our wonderful country - and equally valuable opportunities for me and a few other adults to teach those lessons. We grown-ups learned a few things along the way, too", writes philanthropist and Chairman and CEO of Touchstone Communications, Tom Slone, in his inspirational and life lesson filled book Grounders: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey of Baseball, History, and Mentoring. The author describes his travels around America's baseball parks, mentoring underprivileged boys, and both sharing and learning life lessons along the way.

Tom Slone recognizes the importance of male role models for boys who lack any positive male influences in their lives. To break the cycle of broken homes, and of absentee fathers, the author and his colleagues took the at risk boys to baseball games around America. As the boys accompanied Tom Slone to the games, they were provided with an alternative form of mentoring. The author shared the lessons he learned from his decades in business, and those learned in his own life. He also offered the wisdom to be gleaned from the game of baseball itself, and how the actions of players, teams, and the events on the field teach valuable life changing behavior.

Tom Slone (photo left) understands how mentoring and coaching have proven beneficial to both the company and the employee. The author applies the same lessons to the lives of the boys being mentored, through personal experience and the tangible examples of baseball. Tom Slone points out that not all lessons are pleasant, and are often hard ones. If given with love, respect, and a genuine interest in helping the other person succeed in their career and life, they will be effective.

Tom Slone delivers thirty-three life lessons over the course of fourteen clear and concise chapters. The various baseball themed chapters, each with valuable wisdom, are as follows:

* Warmup
* Life's lessons begin early
* The value of H.O.P.E.
* The players and the game plan
* Opening day
* Prayers, hope, and Superman
* Early arrivals and bottomless bellies
* History 10, Baseball 6
* Our great Ohio meetup
* Charged with an error
* The World Champion of cities
* Good manners, clean clothes, and discipline
* Two oldies but goodies
* Rounding third and heading for home

Foe me, the power of the book is how Tom Slone shares so much timeless wisdom, through a journey to baseball stadiums, with some boys who needing some male guidance. While completely understanding that mentoring the boys, in an one on one manner is most effective, the same event is taking place with the reader. Tom Slone shares his philosophy of life, and of helping others, through the example of story.

With that fundamental principle of teaching in place, the author offers engaging and memorable truths about living a good life, and a successful life that is a blessing to other people as well. The stories are presented with good humor, and many wonderful black and white photographs of the people involved in the tours. The photos enrich the experience, and provide additional depth to the stories.

I highly recommend the engaging and wisdom filled book Grounders: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey of Baseball, History, and Mentoring by Tom Slone, to anyone seeking a remarkable story of mentoring, baseball, travel, and self discovery. Applying the lessons and personal attributes shared in this fine book will change not only your life, but the lives of those around you as well.

Format: Paperback, 320 pages
ISBN-10: 1601631898
ISBN-13: 978-1601631893
Publisher: Career Press

"This book is intended for anyone who works with people and who wants to maximize the impact his/her employees have to ensure the success of the organization:, write co-founder of The Millennial Group International, LLC, Barbara Mitchell; and president of The Gems Group, Ltd., Cornelia Gamlem, in their very comprehensive and hands on book The Big Book of HR. The authors describe the challenges facing HR professionals, share best practices for good decision making, and provide guidance for integrating HR into the overall organizational strategy and management team.

Barbara Mitchell (photo left) and Cornelia Gamlem recognize the profound changes that have taken place within organizations as to the role of HR professionals. Since managing people is a challenge faced by every manager and executive, the authors provide important insights into the management of personnel. With HR having evolved far from the past role of performing exclusively administrative duties, the authors present the new and expanded role played by HR professionals.

The authors offer key insights into how HR can advise leaders in organizational strategy, for ensuring that the right people are brought into the company, and for helping line managers realize the full potential of every employee. Instead of limiting themselves to personnel related issues only, the authors provide the reasoning and support information for HR managers to become an integral part of the strategic planning for the entire organization.

Cornelia Gamlem (photo left) and Barbara Mitchell understand that an HR professional must stand out as an important member of the strategic management team. To ensure that HR managers are prepared for this new leadership role, the authors present the critical principles and techniques for ensuring success for the HR manager, for the entire HR department, and for the company as a whole.

As with all areas of the organization, the impact of multiple generations within the workplace, globalization of operations and staff, and the role of technology have an impact on Human Resources managers as well. The authors divide their book into five overarching sections, with each segment offering deeper insight and advice on the overall subject material. The five sections are as follows:

* Selecting and assimilating new employees
* Employee engagement and retention
* Total rewards, compensation, and benefits
* Employee development and coaching
* Employee relations within the organization

For me, the power of the book is how Barbara Mitchell and Cornelia Gamlem combine a complete overall framework for the HR management professional, with the practical tools and techniques for managing people, and for taking leadership role within the organization. The authors have created a very hands on book, designed to be used as a reference and a guide for HR managers. The book is divided into easy to navigate sections, and each individual chapter is written as stand alone advice. The HR professional can turn immediately to the appropriate chapter, and find sound advice at their fingertips.

The authors go beyond standard HR advice and information as well. They also provide the tools and concepts for integrating HR into the overall planning and leadership in all aspects of the organization. The authors present a strong case for HR professionals to be consulted by leaders in all aspects of the company, and for input into the firm's overall future development and growth. With the myriad of challenges facing all organizations now and in the future, the knowledge and experience of HR professionals will be a critical part of meeting those challenges.

I highly recommend the complete and very practical book The Big Book of HR by Barbara Mitchell and Cornelia Gamlem, to any HR professionals and managers within corporations, non-profit organizations, private consulting practices, the public sector, and entrepreneurs seeking a very comprehensive and idea filled book that covers all aspects of Human Resources in any organization. This book will be a fixture on the shelves of HR management professionals as a handy go to guide for creating real human capital solutions.

Executive Toughness by Jason Selk - Book review

Executive Toughness

The Mental-Training Program to Increase Your Leadership Performance

By: Jason Selk, Ph.D.

Published: November 3, 2011
Format: Hardcover, 224 pages
ISBN-10: 0071786783
ISBN-13: 978-0071786782
Publisher: McGraw-Hill

"You begin to approach greatness when you know how you define your own version of success and dedicate yourself to performing at or above your potential on a consistent basis in service of those life goals", writes one of the premier performance coaches of athletes, coaches and business executives in the United States, Jason Selk, Ph.D., in his inspirational and hands on book Executive Toughness: The Mental-Training Program to Increase Your Leadership Performance. The author describes how talent is not as important for achieving top performance as being mentally tough, and shares proven techniques for learning mental toughness in any field.

Jason Selk understands the importance of mental toughness for high performance athletes. As director of mental training for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006, they became World Series champions for the first time in two decades. He then helped the Cardinals win the World Series again in 2011. For Jason Selk, the techniques that worked so effectively for champion baseball players, work equally as well for executives in any industry. The author provides those winning techniques, that anyone can learn and put into practice, to achieve success in any endeavor. Instead of the limiting behaviors and negative mindsets that prevent executives from reaching the top of their game, the author demonstrates how the concept of mental toughness will replace those problems that result in performance reduction.

Jason Selk, Ph.D. (photo left) recognizes that any approach to achieving executive toughness must be simple to understand, and applicable in a wide variety of circumstances. The author points out that executive toughness is the natural outgrowth of mental toughness, defined as the ability to focus on and execute solutions, even in the face of adversity.

The concept of mental toughness may be simple, writes Jason Selk, but that in no way means that it is easy. For the author, that means working hard at the principles and exercises to strengthen the mental muscles. The author provides the overarching principles that provide a fresh focus to one's thinking, and replaces the previous modes of thought that sabotaged success. The three fundamentals of top performance and success are as follows:

* Accountability: Admit mistakes, correct them, and learn from them
* Focus: Concentrate on strengths, winning, and achieving goals
* Optimism: Replace belief in succeeding with knowing success will happen

For me, the power of the book is how Jason Selk provides a strong theoretical framework, that is both understandable and effective, and shares the techniques and practices to make it a reality. The author offers a book that is also a workbook, filled with daily exercises for strengthening mental muscles, and for achieving top performance. The techniques presented are proven in the real world ranging from top level sports stadiums to major corporate boardrooms.

Along with the development of stronger resolve to succeed, the author also demonstrates how to remove those previously limiting beliefs that either resulted in blocking success, or even caused outright failure. Through following the program presented in the book, anyone can develop mental toughness, and succeed in overcoming any challenges. The author is honest enough to point out that the system is not easy, but instead offers a challenge that is truly rewarding.

I highly recommend the motivational and real world tested book Executive Toughness: The Mental-Training Program to Increase Your Leadership Performance by Jason Selk. Ph.D., to anyone in business, government agencies, sports, non-profit organizations, the professions, or in their personal lives seeking a proven and practical guide to achieving peak performance and success in any endeavor. This book will transform anyone, who is willing to put in the work and practice the exercises, into an individual who excels in any walk of life.

Words Can Change Your Brain by Andrew Newberg & Mark Robert Waldman - Book review

Words Can Change Your Brain

12 Conversation Strategies to Build Trust, Resolve Conflict, and Increase Intimacy

By: Andrew Newberg, M.D., Mark Robert Waldman

Published: June 14, 2012
Format: Hardcover, 272 pages
ISBN-10: 1594630909
ISBN-13: 978-1594630903
Publisher: Hudson Street Press/Penguin

"Our brain has given us the potential to communicate in extraordinary ways,and the ways we choose to use our words can improve the neural functioning of the brain. In fact, a single word has the power ti influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress", write Director of Research at the Myrna Brind Center for Integrative medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Medical College, Andrew Newberg, M.D.; and Adjunct Faculty at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, Mark Robert Waldman, in their groundbreaking and eye opening book Words Can Change Your Brain: 12 Conversation Strategies to Build Trust, Resolve Conflict, and Increase Intimacy. The authors describe how despite our human gift of language, people are not always very effective at communicating with others, and require a deeper understanding of how words and nonverbal cues are critical for establishing successful interpersonal relationships.

Andrew Newberg, M.D. (photo left) and Mark Robert Waldman recognize how fundamentally important language is to our lives. Despite this importance, however, people very often fail to communicate well with other people. The authors provide evidence that people simply don't talk well in conversation. Words are selected that fail in meaning, intention, and result.

Which words are chosen are all too often spoken in the wrong tone, at the wrong speed, and in an ineffective cadence. Listening skills, when others are talking, are often weak and fail to hear the other person's meaning. At the same time, the unspoken body language and facial expressions may very easily convey a different message from the spoken words. To change this deficit in communication skills, the authors propose their twelve step strategy they call Compassionate Communication.

Mark Robert Waldman (photo left) and Andrew Newberg understand that if a person chooses different words, learns how to decode the unspoken messages of the face and body, and changes the tone and cadence of their speech, that their communication skills will improve. While that insight is valuable, it is only part of the crucial message conveyed by the authors. They present the research that points to how words will also change your brain, as well as the brain of the person with whom conversation is shared.

With this knowledge in hand, the authors share how enhanced communication, based on their twelve steps, will create trust, build closer bonds, aid in conflict resolution, and regain lost closeness. The twelve steps to compassionate communication are as follows:

* Relax
* Stay present
* Cultivate inner silence
* Increase positivity
* Access a pleasant memory
* Observe nonverbal clues
* Express appreciation
* Speak warmly
* Speak slowly
* Speak briefly
* Listen deeply

For me, the power of the book is how Andrew Newberg and Mark Robert Waldman combine the theoretical framework of verbal and nonverbal language, with the practical techniques for improving interpersonal communication. The key insight of the book is how the very choice of words affects the brain of the speaker, as well as that of the listener. Building on leading edge research, the authors present compassionate communication strategy that builds a strong connection between people. That bridge is created through improved communication skills.

The practices for developing those bonds between people are ones that can be learned and applied in a variety of business and interpersonal settings. Through the practice and application of the techniques outlined in the book, the many languages of the brain can be developed and improved over time. For business people, the recognition that improved communication creates stronger relationships with customers has a positive effect on the bottom line.

I highly recommend the research based and revolutionary book Words Can Change Your Brain: 12 Conversation Strategies to Build Trust, Resolve Conflict, and Increase Intimacy by Andrew Newberg, M.D., and Mark Robert Waldman, to any business leaders, negotiators, front line customer service personnel, sales representatives, non-profit organization executives, professionals, members of government, government agency employees, union leaders, and anyone interested in improving their communication skills in the workplace or at home. This book will change the way you think about and approach communication with others forever.
