The authors share the stories of memorable Jane Austen women characters and how they solved the problems of shortages of cash, keeping up appearances, and saving some money for the future. Jane Austen's Guide to Thrift by Kathleen Anderson & Susan Jones - Book review

Jane Austen's Guide to Thrift

An Independent Woman's Advice on Living within One's Means

By: Kathleen Anderson, Susan Jones

Published: April 2, 2013
Format: Paperback, 288 pages
ISBN-10: 042526016X
ISBN-13: 978-0425260166
Publisher: Berkley Publishing

"We love Jane Austen! Austen's spirited characters and her solid, practical values are as alive with us today as they were in her own time. The more we read her work and enter her world, the more we learn about ourselves", write professors of English and members of the Jane Austen Society of North America, Kathleen Anderson and Susan Jones, in their delightful and practical financial advice filled book Jane Austen's Guide to Thrift: An Independent Woman's Advice on Living within One's Means. The authors describe how the many memorable women characters, in the classic novels of Jane Austen, provide timeless insights into saving money, living within your means, and the true understanding that money doesn't equal happiness.

Kathleen Anderson and Susan Jones recognize that Jane Austen wrote her famous novels, filled with wonderful female characters, two hundred years ago. Despite that time separation, however, the ideas presented in the books and through Jane Austen's own life experience, demonstrate that the more things change, the more they stay the same. In the six well known novels, Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818, posthumous), Persuasion (1818, posthumous), Jane Austen displayed a keen eye to how women managed their money, saved for the future, and generally kept up appearances despite often reduced circumstances. The authors point out that the same very human needs and desires are found in our own time. They point out that following the same sound financial advice as an Austen heroine will help a woman of today to have it all.

Kathleen Anderson (left in photo left) and Susan Jones (right in photo left) understand that there are many ways to earn and manage money, and many ways to spend it. In the brilliant writing of Jane Austen, an entire society with its demands and desires, is brought to live. As with any other time, money is a necessary ingredient to living, and for many of the female characters, finding either the money or the end products present a real challenge. Despite the often shortage of ready cash, the women in the Austen novels display resourcefulness, an eye for a bargain, and unique solutions to the cash shortage problem.

From the novels of Jane Austen, Kathleen Anderson and Susan Jones share the following financial insights, as brought to life by the heroines in the books:

* Self respect and other benefits of living within our means
* Lucy Steele on investments
* Household economy the Charlotte Lucas way
* Comparison shopping for clothes with Anne Elliot and friends
* Lydia Bennet, fashionista, and the art of transforming fashion finds
* Elinor Tilney's clever economics
* A heroine's health and beauty on a budget
* Elinor Dashwood and the art of elegant homemaking and entertaining
* Austen-tatious antique sales, auctions, estate sales, and flea markets
* Catherine Moreland's lessons on being a gracious guest and savvy traveler
* Enjoying life's free (or nearly free) pleasures like Jane
* Celebrating holidays, weddings, and feasts with the joy of Mrs. Smith
* Miss Bates and the giving spirit
* Austen's rules for refusing, accepting, and giving gifts
* Reprioritizing our lives and always having it all

For me, the power of the book is how Kathleen Anderson and Susan Jones combine the literary genius of Jane Austen's marvelous women characters, with very practical and real world based financial advice. Partly personal financial primer, and partly guide to the memorable heroines in Jane Austen's novels, this book works for readers on more than one level. For women seeking hands on financial management skills, whether they are in midlife or starting out in their careers, there is useful and entertaining information for all personal aspirations.

Kathleen Anderson and Susan Jones also offer a fresh perspective into the novels, as they present the practical worldly side of their characters' lives, as an accompaniment to the vivid characterizations of these remarkable women of literature. In the end, the authors agree with Jane Austen. It is possible to live the good life and find happiness, and that the fulfillment of one's life is not dependent solely on having large amounts of money. It's how that money is used and saved that really matters for the woman who wants to have it all.

I highly recommend the highly entertaining and many management idea packed book Jane Austen's Guide to Thrift: An Independent Woman's Advice on Living within One's Means by Kathleen Anderson and Susan Jones, to any women, regardless of age, marital status, or career level, who are seeking clear eyed advice on living the good life without incurring financial ruin. This book presents timeless wisdom on money and life, as presented through the actions of Jane Austen's wonderful female characters, that will transform any woman into their own version of an Austen heroine.

Decision Making in Natural Resource Management by Michael J. Conroy & James T. Peterson - Book review

Decision Making in Natural Resource Management

A Structured, Adaptive Approach

By: Michael J. Conroy, James T. Peterson

Published: March 25, 2013
Format: Paperback, 474 pages
ISBN-10: 0470671742
ISBN-13: 978-0470671740
Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell

"This book is intended for use by natural resources managers and scientists, and students in the fields of natural resource management, ecology, and conservation biology, who are or will be confronted with complex and difficult decision-making problems", write Senior Research Scientist in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia,Michael J. Conroy; and Assistant Unit Leader and Associate Professor for the USGS Oregon Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Oregon State University, James T. Peterson, in their comprehensive and structured approach based book Decision Making in Natural Resource Management: A Structured, Adaptive Approach. The authors describe a structured method to achieve better decision making in the various areas related to natural resource management, including consideration of the holistic and integrated aspects of the overall challenge.

Michael J. Conroy (photo left) and James T. Peterson understand that governmental and private agencies will seek an insufficient technical solution to their perceived problem. The authors present a practical and common sense based model for reaching decisions that go beyond the surface to consider the deeper goals and objectives of the organization.

The authors point out that organizations have real shortcomings in relating the various elements of their decision making process to one another, and the their mission and goals. For the authors, that failure to take an integrated approach is due to a lack of structure. The authors propose a fully structured and integrated alternative to the ad hoc decisions so often reached on conservation related issues.

James T. Peterson (photo left) and Michael J. Conroy divide their book into four major parts. The authors also recommend reading in each of the four sections to develop familiarity with their structured methodology. The four major parts are as follows:

* Introduction to decision making
* Tools for decision making and analysis
* Applications
* Appendices

Within these four overarching areas, are more in depth chapters that create a richer understanding of the principles involved in a structure decision making process. The subject areas covered in the four sections are as follows:

* Why a structured approach in natural resources
* Elements of structured decision making
* Identifying and quantifying elements in natural resource management
* Working with stakeholders in natural resource management
* Statistics and decision making
* Modeling the influence of decisions
* Identifying and reducing uncertainty in decision making
* Methods for obtaining optimal decisions
* Case studies
* Summary, lessons learned, and recommendations
* Probability and distributional relationships
* Common statistical distributions
* Methods for statistical estimations
* Parsimony, prediction, and multi-model inference
* Mathematical approaches to optimization
* Guide to software
* Electronic companion to book

For me, the power of the book is how Michael J. Conroy and James T. Peterson combine a complete decision making framework, with the tools and methods for practical applications to natural resource problems. The authors take a fully integrated and holistic approach to making decisions that establishes the real problem first, and then offers viable and effective solutions through sophisticated models that are propelled by specific and well defined objectives.The authors provide in depth case studies of the structured decision making process in action in resolving natural resource problems in the real world.

The book moves well beyond the standard ad hoc process applied by many government and private organizations when faced with a conservation issue. The process also guides the client toward fully understanding the true nature of the problem, by looking past superficial issues, to seek out the real challenge needing a solution. The book contains numerous charts and graphics to enhance understanding of the structured approach, complete appendices with practical tools, as well as access to to a very helpful electronic companion to the book.

I highly recommend the very results oriented and working model based book Decision Making in Natural Resource Management: A Structured, Adaptive Approach by Michael J. Conroy and James T. Peterson, to any natural resource managers, scientists, government policy makers, business leaders, conservation groups, and students of natural resource management, ecology, and conservation biology who are seeking a complete guide to structured and effective decision making in the area of natural resource management. This book will guide leaders toward better decisions, through a more integrated examination of the real problems to find viable and effective solutions.

We The People: Consenting to a Deeper Democracy by John Buck and Sharon Villines - Book review

We the People

Consenting to a Deeper Democracy

By: John Buck, Sharon Villines

Published: May 23, 2007
Format: Perfect Paperback: 278 pages
ISBN-10: 0979282705
ISBN-13: 978-0979282706
Publisher: Sociocracy.info Press

"Sociocratic governance builds on the values and experience of democracy and the scientific discoveries of the twentieth century to create an even more participatory and inclusive system", write CEO of the Sociocracy Consulting Group, and associate at Creative Learning Solutions, Inc., John Buck:, and writer and artist, Sharon Villines, in their revolutionary and thought provoking book We the People: Consenting to a Deeper Democracy. The authors describe the concept of sociocracy, and the principles of dynamic self government, and how they can be applied to workplaces, communities, governments, and other organizations.

John Buck (photo left) and Sharon Villines present a new methodology for governance, in any organization, that transforms their structure into one that is more inclusive and efficient. Instead of a top down system, where decisions are centralized, the sociocratic model emphasizes consent and collaboration as the basis for the decision making process.

The process enhances communication within the organization, as the governance structure includes input and voices at all levels of the company, and form interested parties and clients from the outside as well. The authors offer the principles of establishing a sociocratic approach to any type of organization, and share the methods for putting it into practice.

Sharon Villines (photo left) and John Buck recognize that the current governance model in organizations of all types, including workplaces, governments, and communities are not utilizing the most effective decision making model. The authors present evidence that companies are not achieving their optimum level of profitability due to inadequate use of available ideas. The current model is a static one, and lacks the dynamics available under a more inclusive and collaborative system.

The authors share the following steps for implementing a socicratic model of self governance into an organization:

* Inclusive decision making
* Developing quality
* Steering and structure
* New leadership strategies
* Fair compensation and free organizations
* Circles and implementation
* Consent and rounds
* Electing people
* Organizing work
* Money as measurement

For me, the power of the book is how John Buck and Sharon Villines combine a strong theoretical framework for understanding the principles of dynamic self governance with a practical blueprint for putting this new system into action. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of the foundations of sociocratic principles that are both revolutionary, and yet very conservative in nature. This seeming paradox provides for the addition of new ideas, but in a familiar and understandable approach.

The book contains many graphs and diagrams to illustrate the principles being described in each chapter. A real benefit to the book is the extensive Appendices that add further depth and additional viewpoints to the subject matter. Indeed, these extra chapters are in keeping with the principles of the dynamic self governance by proving a platform to include other voices. The authors also provide a glossary of the terms used in the book to enhance the overall understanding of the concepts and ideas presented throughout the text.

I highly recommend the idea filled and governance transforming book We the People: Consenting to a Deeper Democracy by John Buck and Sharon Villines, to any leaders and groups seeking a guide to establishing a more collaborative and inclusive decision making and leadership process into any organization. This book will change the way you look at all organizations and their current decision making methods forever.
